Gum health is linked to wider health, including diabetes. Simple daily habits and regular reviews at our Finchley Road practice can help protect both.

Your mouth is not separate from the rest of your body. Researchers have found associations between gum disease and several general health conditions. That does not mean one directly causes the other in every case, but it is a good reason to look after your gums.

What gum disease is

Gum disease starts when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up along the gumline. Early on, called gingivitis, gums may look red or bleed when you brush. If it is not managed, it can progress to periodontitis, which affects the bone that supports the teeth and can eventually loosen them.

Links with general health

  • Diabetes: poorly controlled blood sugar makes gum disease more likely, and treating gum disease can support diabetes management.
  • Heart and circulation: studies have reported associations with cardiovascular disease, and research is ongoing.
  • Pregnancy: hormonal changes can make gums more prone to inflammation.

Everyday habits that help

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and spit rather than rinse.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with interdental brushes or floss.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary food and drinks.
  • If you smoke, ask us or your GP about support to stop. Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease.

Regular reviews

Gum disease often causes no pain in its early stages, so you may not notice it yourself. Examinations and hygiene appointments let us spot early changes and help you keep on top of them. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, let us know so we can tailor your care.
