How Invisalign clear aligners work, who may be suitable, what treatment involves and the commitment needed, from our Finchley Road practice in NW3.

Many adults would like straighter teeth but prefer not to wear fixed braces. Clear aligners such as Invisalign are one option for some people.

How clear aligners work

A series of custom-made, removable plastic trays moves your teeth gradually. Each set is worn for a period before you move on to the next. Small tooth-coloured attachments are sometimes bonded to teeth to help the aligners grip.

Who may be suitable?

Aligners can treat many cases of crowding, spacing and some bite problems. More complex cases may be better treated with fixed braces or need referral to an orthodontist. Your gums and teeth must be healthy before treatment starts.

What treatment involves

  1. An assessment, including a digital scan and photos.
  2. A treatment plan showing the predicted tooth movements. The simulation shows a predicted outcome, and actual results may differ.
  3. Regular reviews to check progress.
  4. Retainers at the end of treatment to help hold the teeth in their new positions.

The commitment

  • Aligners typically need to be worn for around 20 to 22 hours a day.
  • You remove them to eat and drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back in.
  • Teeth may feel tight or tender for a day or two after starting each new set.
  • Retainers need to be worn long term, otherwise teeth can move back.

Treatment time and results vary from person to person. Find out more on our Invisalign page.
