If you have lost one or more teeth, you may be weighing up implants, a bridge or a denture. This article sets out the main points to consider before an implant consultation at our Finchley Road practice.

What an implant is

A dental implant is a small titanium or ceramic post placed in the jawbone. Once it has bonded with the bone, it can support a crown, a bridge or a denture.

Possible benefits

• A fixed replacement that does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, unlike a conventional bridge.
• Better stability for dentures in people who struggle with a loose lower denture.
• Help maintaining bone in the area where the tooth was lost.

Limitations and risks

• Not everyone is suitable. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease and some medications can affect healing.
• Some people need a bone graft or sinus procedure first, which adds time and cost.
• As with any surgery, there are risks, including infection, nerve injury and implant failure. These will be explained before you consent.
• Implants need ongoing care and checks. They can develop gum and bone problems, known as peri-implantitis.

The typical journey

1. A consultation with an examination and, where needed, 3D imaging to assess the bone.
2. A written plan with options, including non-implant alternatives, and itemised costs.
3. Implant placement under local anaesthetic.
4. A healing period, often a few months, before the final tooth is fitted.
5. Regular reviews and hygiene visits.

Results vary from person to person. With good home care and regular check-ups, many implants last for many years. See our dental implants page and fees for more information.
