Comparing the main ways to replace missing teeth, including implants, bridges and dentures, so you can discuss options at our Finchley Road practice.

If you have a gap, there is no single right answer. The right choice depends on your mouth, your health, your budget and what matters most to you. Here is a side-by-side overview of the main options.

Dentures

  • Removable, and can replace one tooth or a full arch.
  • Usually the least invasive and lowest cost option.
  • Some people find lower dentures move when eating or speaking.

Bridges

  • Fixed in place, using neighbouring teeth for support.
  • Usually quicker than implants, with no surgery.
  • Conventional bridges involve preparing the supporting teeth, and cleaning underneath needs care.

Implant-supported teeth

  • A post placed in the jawbone supports a crown, bridge or denture.
  • Does not rely on neighbouring teeth.
  • Involves surgery and a healing period, and suitability depends on bone, gum health and medical history.
  • Usually the highest cost option, and needs ongoing maintenance.

Leaving the gap

This is also a valid choice for some gaps, but neighbouring teeth can drift over time, so it is worth discussing.

Implant-retained dentures

For people who struggle with a loose lower denture, two or more implants can sometimes help hold it in place. This can be a middle ground between a conventional denture and fixed teeth.

Making a decision

At a consultation we examine your mouth, take any X-rays or scans needed, and give you a written comparison of suitable options with costs. Results vary between individuals. See our dental implants page and fees.
