Pregnancy can affect your gums. What to expect, which treatment is safe, and how NHS maternity exemption works, from our Finchley Road practice.

Pregnancy brings plenty of appointments, and the dentist is one worth keeping. Hormonal changes can affect your mouth, and a little extra care now can prevent problems later.

Common changes in pregnancy

  • Pregnancy gingivitis: gums may become swollen and bleed more easily when you brush.
  • Morning sickness: stomach acid can soften enamel. Rinse with water or a fluoride mouthwash afterwards, and wait about an hour before brushing.
  • Cravings and snacking: frequent sugary snacks increase the risk of decay.

Is dental treatment safe while pregnant?

Check-ups, cleaning and most routine treatment can be carried out during pregnancy. Many people find the middle trimester the most comfortable time for non-urgent treatment. X-rays are only taken when clinically necessary. Let us know that you are pregnant, how many weeks you are and any medicines you are taking, so we can plan your care. Urgent problems such as toothache or swelling should not be put off.

NHS charges and maternity exemption

In England, NHS dental treatment is free while you are pregnant and for 12 months after your baby is born, if you hold a valid maternity exemption certificate. This applies to NHS treatment only. Ask your midwife or GP about the certificate. If you receive private care, normal private fees apply.

Looking after your mouth at home

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day.
  • Choose tooth-friendly snacks such as cheese, plain yoghurt or vegetables.
  • Drink water regularly, especially if you are being sick.

After your baby arrives

Book a check-up for yourself once things settle. When your baby’s first teeth appear, bring them along too. Find out more on our children’s dentistry page.
